A bay window over the trees
Black window frames, oak on the floor and walls with a concrete texture. A hundred and forty furnished square metres, with the kitchen open to the living room, in Chamberí.
Of the home’s hundred and forty square metres, most go to a single room: the living room, dining area and kitchen share an oak floor, a white ceiling with recessed spotlights and a row of openings onto the street. The most striking is the bay window, a curved, black-framed volume that follows the turn of the façade and reveals, on the other side, the stone balustrade and the treetops.
Facing it, a deep modular sofa in anthracite grey, with mustard and patterned cushions, and two round black metal nesting tables. The television hangs on the white wall above a low wooden bench. In the middle of the plan, a dark iron column, left exposed, marks where the sitting area ends and the kitchen begins.
The kitchen opens onto the living room with no boundary other than a pale wood breakfast bar with two black wire stools. The fronts are walnut-toned with black recessed grip handles; the worktop is matt black, with a flush-mounted induction hob and the oven beneath it. Above the bar hang two filament bulbs, and on the wall, a wooden panel with shelves for plants and jars.
A second run, with the sink under the window, extends the worktop towards the corridor. Here the floor changes to a strip of dark tiles that marks out the working area against the oak. From the hob you can see the whole home: the table, the sofa, the bay window.
The main bedroom takes up the full width of the home. Three openings in the same wall, with dark roller blinds and a white vertical radiator between them; beneath the windows, a cantilevered wooden top with black drawers serves as a desk or dressing table. The bed, with a grey upholstered headboard and two pendant lamps on either side, rests against a wall with the same concrete finish as the living room.
Opposite, the wall is painted dark grey and an oak door slides along it on its track; beside it, another in translucent glass. The wardrobe is a floor-to-ceiling front of smoked glass in black frames that reflects the entire room. A short-pile grey rug and white bed linen with a mustard cushion, the same colour as the dining chairs.
Gaztambide is the western edge of Chamberí: a grid of straight streets between Cea Bermúdez, Princesa and Alberto Aguilera, crossed by Andrés Mellado, Guzmán el Bueno and Fernando el Católico. It is a neighbourhood of residents and students, with shops at street level and the Ciudad Universitaria just beyond. The metro stations are spread around its edges: Argüelles and Moncloa towards Princesa, Islas Filipinas to the north. The Parque del Oeste lies on the other side of Princesa, a short stroll away.
The home is let furnished, with a fully equipped kitchen, air conditioning and a lift in the building. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms for a couple or a small family who want a large living space, the kind that lets you cook, eat and entertain without changing rooms.
